The Journey Behind Generations Forward MT
Every Place Has a Story. Every Community Has a Voice.
Every Generation Has Something to Learn.
Some stories are written in books. Others are shared around the dinner table, passed down during family gatherings, remembered through songs, celebrated in community traditions, or quietly told by grandparents and elders who choose to share them. Those are often the stories that stay with us the longest.
Growing up in Montana, I learned many of the lessons that shaped who I am outside the classroom. They came from listening. I listened to my grandparents, my family, and the elders who generously shared their knowledge, experiences, and memories. Through those conversations, I learned that stories do more than help us remember the past. They teach us who we are, where we come from, and how we can move forward together.
As I grew older, I realized that many of these stories aren't found in textbooks or taught through traditional educational systems. They live through oral tradition, community gatherings, music, language, family conversations, and everyday moments that often go unnoticed.
Those stories deserve to be shared.
They deserve to inspire.
And they deserve to continue connecting generations for years to come.
That belief became the foundation for Generations Forward MT.
Growing Up in Montana
Growing up in Montana as an enrolled Crow (Apsáalooke) tribal member, while also being a descendant of the Navajo (Diné), Arikara (Sahnish), Gros Ventre (Aaniiih), and Nez Perce (Niimíipuu) peoples, has shaped the way I see the world.
These experiences have taught me the importance of community, respect, generosity, and learning from those who came before us.
I'm equally proud to call Montana home. Montana has a way of inviting you to slow down, look around, and appreciate the stories woven into every landscape. From the mountains and rivers to the open prairies, small towns, tribal communities, historic places, and local businesses, every part of this state has something to teach us.
Montana is home to twelve tribal nations, each with its own unique history, traditions, languages, and contributions. Together with vibrant urban Native American communities, they continue to shape the culture, history, and future of our state. Every community adds another chapter to Montana's story.
Some of my favorite adventures are simply spending time outdoors. Whether I'm hiking a trail, exploring a new community, watching wildlife, or driving Montana's back roads, I'm reminded that the land tells stories, too. Our rivers, mountains, forests, prairies, and wildlife have shaped the people who call Montana home, honoring the longstanding presence of Native American communities while welcoming new generations whose experiences continue adding new chapters to Montana's story. The more I learn about Montana's landscapes and ecology, the more I appreciate how deeply connected our environment is to our history, our communities, and our future.
As I continued learning from the people around me, I realized something that would eventually become the foundation of this journey.
Every generation has something valuable to teach. Every generation has something new to discover.
That's where the name Generations Forward MT comes from.
I don't believe moving forward means leaving the past behind. I believe it means carrying forward the lessons we've learned, learning from one another, and creating new stories that future generations will one day share.
Looking Beyond What We Already Know
When many people think about Montana, they often picture breathtaking landscapes. When they think about Native American culture, powwows are often the first thing that comes to mind. Both are beautiful introductions, but they're only the beginning of the story. Every new experience reminds me that there is always more to learn, more people to meet, and more stories waiting to be shared.
Across Montana, there are artists creating remarkable work, musicians preserving traditions while composing something entirely new, entrepreneurs building businesses, teachers shaping future generations, scientists making discoveries, veterans serving their communities, language speakers preserving generations of knowledge, and countless others making a difference every day. Whether they're preserving long-held traditions or creating something entirely new, their stories deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated.
Whether it's a family-owned ranch that's been operating for generations, a tribal elder sharing memories, a museum curator preserving history, a local artist, a small business owner, a park ranger introducing visitors to Montana's landscapes, or a young person pursuing a dream, every person adds another layer to Montana's story.
I hope Generations Forward MT encourages people to look a little closer. To ask one more question. To visit a place they've never been. To learn something they didn't know before.
Through Generations Forward MT, I hope to celebrate Native American culture while also highlighting the incredible diversity of people, communities, landscapes, traditions, and experiences that make Montana such a special place. I want people to experience Montana not just as a destination, but as a place filled with history, culture, curiosity, and the remarkable people whose stories make it unlike anywhere else.
Always Learning
One of the greatest gifts I've been given is the opportunity to learn from others.
Throughout my life, I've often been the one being interviewed through pageantry, youth leadership, public speaking, media opportunities, and community events. Those experiences allowed me to share my own story, but they also inspired me to start asking questions of my own.
What stories haven't been told yet? Who have we not met yet? What can we learn from one another?
Today, I find just as much joy standing behind the camera or microphone as I do standing in front of one. Every conversation teaches me something new, every person offers a different perspective, and every destination helps me better understand the people who call it home.
The more I explore Montana, the more I realize there is still so much to learn. That's one of the reasons I started spending more time behind the camera than in front of it. I don't believe I have all the answers. I simply believe that curiosity, respect, and a willingness to listen have the power to build understanding and bring people together.
As I continue my education, travel, and meet people from different backgrounds, I hope I never lose that sense of curiosity. I want to keep asking thoughtful questions, discovering new places, and learning from the people willing to share their stories. My hope is that this same curiosity encourages others, especially young people, to ask questions, explore places they've never been, try something they've never imagined, and never stop learning.
Not every opportunity works out exactly as we expect, and not every dream happens overnight. But every experience teaches us something. Sometimes the greatest opportunities begin with simply having the courage to say yes. Sometimes they begin with asking one more question. And sometimes they begin with believing in yourself enough to take the first step.
More Than Music
Music has always been another way I tell stories.
As a cellist, I've learned that music can preserve emotion, celebrate culture, and build connections in ways words sometimes cannot. Whether performing on stage, playing alongside other musicians, or sharing music with a community, I've seen how it brings people together through a shared experience. A single performance can tell a story without speaking a single word, reminding us that some of the most meaningful connections don't always require conversation.
Growing up, I didn't always realize how many talented Native American musicians and artists were all around me. Sometimes it felt like there weren't many of us pursuing classical music or creative paths outside of what people might expect. As I continued playing, traveling, and meeting students from across Montana and beyond, I discovered something incredible.
There are so many talented Native American musicians, artists, writers, athletes, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, leaders, and creators. Every one of them has a unique story, a unique gift, and something meaningful to contribute. They may not always receive the spotlight, but that doesn't make their impact any less important.
Music has reminded me that stories can be shared in many different ways. Sometimes they're spoken. Sometimes they're written. Sometimes they're passed down through family traditions. Sometimes they're expressed through dance, art, or language. And sometimes they're carried through a melody that connects people without saying a single word.
That realization reminded me that no two journeys are ever the same. We each bring different experiences, different talents, and different perspectives to the world, and that's something worth celebrating.
I hope every young person understands that they don't have to fit into someone else's expectations to make a difference. Whether your passion is music, art, science, sports, leadership, culture, business, or something completely your own, don't be afraid to pursue it.
Even if you haven't seen many people who share your background pursuing the same path, don't let that stop you from discovering where your own journey can take you. Your journey won't look exactly like anyone else's, and that's what makes it valuable.
Sometimes your journey becomes the encouragement someone else has been waiting for.
Keep learning.
Keep practicing.
Keep showing up.
The world doesn't need another copy of someone else - It needs the unique gifts that only you can share!
More Than a Conversation
One conversation deepened my understanding of why this work matters.
While interviewing community members, I invited each person to share whatever story felt meaningful to them. Some reflected on childhood memories, while others talked about family, culture, traditions, or experiences that had shaped their lives. Every interview was different, yet every story carried its own meaning.
Near the end of one conversation, someone shared how important it was to have their story recorded so future generations of their family could one day experience it for themselves. It wasn't just about documenting a moment. It was about leaving behind something that children, grandchildren, and future family members could return to for years to come.
I'll never forget that realization.
I wasn't simply recording an interview. I was helping preserve a family's history, memories, and legacy in a way that children, grandchildren, and future generations could return to for years to come. Stories have the power to connect people, preserve history, and remind us that every life has something worth sharing.
One day, a grandchild may hear a grandparent's laughter while listening to a favorite memory. A family may rediscover stories they thought had been forgotten. A student may learn something that isn't found in a textbook, and a traveler may gain a deeper appreciation for the community they're visiting. Sometimes the simplest conversations become the ones that leave the greatest impact.
That experience reminded me that storytelling isn't just about preserving the past. It's about carrying stories forward so they can continue inspiring, teaching, and connecting people for generations to come.
More Than a Story
Generations Forward MT isn't simply about creating videos, podcasts, interviews, or social media. Those are the tools I use, but they aren't the purpose behind this journey.
To me, every interview, every conversation, every presentation, and every experience is an opportunity to build connections. It's about celebrating culture, exploring with curiosity, learning from one another, and sharing stories that help us better understand the people and places around us.
My hope isn't simply to document moments. I want to encourage conversations, celebrate communities, inspire curiosity, and help people discover the stories that often go unnoticed. I believe some of the most valuable lessons come from taking the time to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and appreciate the perspectives of others.
Through documentaries, podcasts, interviews, photography, speaking, music, educational experiences, and meaningful conversations, I hope to celebrate the people, places, traditions, and stories that make Montana extraordinary while encouraging others to continue exploring, learning, and sharing their own stories.
If someone leaves one of my presentations, watches an interview, listens to a podcast, or visits a community with a little more curiosity, understanding, and appreciation than they had before, then I know this journey is making a difference.
Sharing Montana With the World
An important part of this journey is supporting Montana Tribal Tourism by helping visitors experience Native American culture through authentic experiences, respectful learning, and genuine connections with the people who call this place home.
At the same time, I hope to introduce people to everything that makes Montana extraordinary. Its communities, history, landscapes, wildlife, artists, traditions, businesses, and the people whose stories continue to shape this remarkable state all deserve to be celebrated.
I believe tourism is about more than visiting a destination. It's about building understanding, supporting local communities, celebrating culture, appreciating different perspectives, and discovering the stories that make every place unique. When we take the time to understand the people behind a place, that place becomes more than somewhere we've visited. It becomes somewhere we've connected with.
As I continue my education, travel, and meet people from around the world, I hope to keep learning right alongside them. I look forward to sharing Montana with new audiences while bringing home new ideas, new friendships, and new perspectives that continue shaping my own journey.
Whether someone has lived here their entire life or is discovering Montana for the very first time, I hope they leave with a deeper appreciation for the people, cultures, places, and stories that make this state unlike anywhere else.
Looking Ahead
I know this journey is only beginning. Every new experience reminds me that there are still countless stories waiting to be heard.
My hope is that Generations Forward MT becomes more than a platform. I hope it becomes a place where people feel inspired to ask questions, appreciate different perspectives, discover new places, celebrate the communities around them, and recognize that every person's story has value.
I believe every generation has something to teach, and every generation has something to learn. If Generations Forward MT inspires one young person to ask another question, encourages one family to preserve and share a story, helps one traveler better understand the place they're visiting, introduces someone to a culture they've never experienced, or simply reminds someone to stay curious, then I know this journey is making a difference.
The more I learn, the more I realize there is still so much to discover. I hope that this journey encourages others to stay curious, build connections, and appreciate the stories that surround us every day. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation, one new experience, or one different perspective to change the way we see the world.
Because every place has a story.
Every community has a voice.
Every generation has something to learn from one another.
